Men's Tennis Opens Season at Napa Valley Classic

MEADOWOOD - The California men's tennis team opened their 2005 fall season at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif., at the Meadowood Resort. On Friday, the Golden Bears opened tournament play against UNC. In singles, the Bears came away with five victories, while in doubles Cal grabbed three convincing wins.
Individually in singles, senior Dean Wallace defeated Sebastian Guejman (4-6, 6-3, 6-1). Freshman Tore Deleuran collected his first collegiate win when he defeated Will Plyler (6-2, 6-4). Also collecting his first victory at Cal, Eoin Heavey outlasted Karl Wishart (6-2, 6-1). Junior John Pettit also tallied a victory against the Tar Heels when he defeated Taylor Fogleman (7-6(4), 6-3). Junior Daniel Sebescen fell to Derek Porter (7-5, 4-6, 6-1). Brad Pomeroy got the best of junior Tyler Browne (2-6, 6-2, 7-5) and sophomore Ken Nakahara fell to Benjamin Carlotti (2-6, 6-1, 6-1).
The Bears success carried over into doubles, where Cal won three of four matches. Heavey and Deleuran teamed to defeat Wishart and Plyler (8-2). Seniors Wallace and Lennart Maack defeated Aly Mandour and Porter 8-4. Pettit and Nakahara also grabbed a doubles victory for the Bears by defeating Guejman and Fogleman (8-3). Cal's lone loss of the day in doubles was handed to Sebescen and Browne by Pomeroy and Luchichi (9-7).
The Bears continue play at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic through Sunday. The tournament is held being held at Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, Calif.
