No. 10 Cal Routs SMU, 5-0
Sept. 11, 2005
MORAGA, Calif. - No. 10 California erupted for a 5-0 victory over Southern Methodist Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium on the final day of the Saint Mary's Fall Soccer Classic. The Golden Bears improved to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Mustangs dropped to 4-3.
'We've been playing well but not creating enough dangerous chances,' Cal head coach Kevin Boyd said. 'We've been addressing this and worked on some things yesterday at practice that helped us. We scored early and gained some confidence from there. We took away some of the things SMU wanted to do early. It was a dominating performance all the way around.'
Senior forward Liz Eisenberg opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute of play. Eisenberg received a through ball from senior forward Dania Cabello and converted a left-footed shot from 16-yards out. The goal would hold up to be Eisenberg's fourth game-winning goal of the season and seventh in the last two years.
At the 33:50 mark, senior midfielder Lindsay Clute extended Cal's advantage to 2-0 with a goal from the right side of the penalty box. Senior midfielder Sierra Schlesinger was credited with the assist.
Ten seconds later, junior defender Alivia Mazura gave the Bears a 3-0 halftime advantage by hitting a 25-yard shot over SMU's goalkeeper Ashley Gunter.
Eisenberg's second goal of the game was an open net attempt set up by a cross from Cabello.
'Dania did a lot to create that goal,' Boyd said. 'Gidget (Eisenberg) and Dania played well together today.'
Clute capped the scoring with her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 86th minute. She headed in a corner kick, which was taken by sophomore midfielder Laurie Gartrell.
Cal out shot SMU, 19-2, as the Bears posted their biggest margin of victory since last year's 5-0 victory at Pacific on Sept. 26. Twenty-three players saw action for Cal against SMU.
Senior Ashley Sulprizio played approximately the first 80 minutes in goal for the Bears, and redshirt freshman Nicole Jarbo wrapped up the contest in her first action in a Cal uniform. Neither player needed to record a save in Cal's third straight shutout victory. Gunter grabbed six saves for the Mustangs.
The Bears next face Pacific Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
