No. 3 Bruins Blank Colorado, 2-0
Sept. 11, 2005
LOS ANGELES - After suffering its first loss of the season two days ago, the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team rebounded strong on Sunday, defeating Colorado, 2-0 at the 2005 UCLA Women's Cup at Drake Stadium. The Bruins improve to 5-1 overall with the victory, while the Buffaloes fall to 1-3-2. Fourth-ranked Penn State, which defeated UCLA, 1-0 in double-overtime on Friday, earned the tournament title with a 3-1 victory over USC on Sunday.
UCLA, which had never faced Colorado prior to Sunday's showdown, got on the board in the 15th minute following a goal by freshman Kara Lang. When the Bruins were awarded a throw-in deep in Buffalo territory, junior Stacy Lindstrom heaved a long ball into the Colorado box. Lang was able to out-jump her defender and flick it just inside the far post for UCLA's first goal of the match.
The Bruins' added an insurance goal in the 65th minute on a strike by senior Iris Mora. Junior defender Mary Castelanelli gathered the ball on the left side and crossed a ball to Mora, who was right at the top of the Colorado box. With her back to the goal, she took one touch, turned and fired a right-footed blast past the outstretched hands of Colorado goalkeeper Jessica Keller. It was Mora's first goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Valerie Henderson turned in another solid performance in the net, making three saves in 90 minutes of action. Keller had four saves on the day. The Bruins outshot the Buffaloes, 13-6.
The Bruins head to Northern California next week, taking on sixth-ranked Santa Clara on Friday and St. Mary's on Sunday.
