Cal Men's Golf Places Fifth at Air Force Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - In their opening tournament of the 2005-06 season, the Cal men's golf team placed fifth Sunday at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, played at Eisenhower Golf Club (7,301-yard, par 72) at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Golden Bears shot a three-round score of 884 (290, 290, 304). Junior Michael Wilson, who redshirted during the 2004-05 season after being named the 2002-03 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and was a member of Cal's national championship squad, paced the Bears with a 214 (71-70-73), tying for sixth.

Cal's other top finisher was freshman George Gandranata, from Jakarta, Indonesia. Gandranata, who attended the Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla., tied for 12th with a 220 (70-73-77).

The Air Force Academy won its own tournament with an 868 (281-286-301), outlasting Weber State (872, 294-294-284).

Boise State's Graham Delaet was the tournament individual champion after shooting a 206 (67, 70, 69) for the two days. Other scores for the Bears included senior Fredrik Svanberg at 223 (tied 30th, 77, 71, 75), sophomore Kyle Dowden at 231 (tied 66th, 73-77-81) and true freshman Larry Wong, from Diamond Bar, Calif. (Diamond Ranch High School) at 231 (tied 66th, 76, 76, 79).
