Bay Area Classic next for No. 6 Cal

BERKELEY - BAY AREA CLASSIC NEXT FOR CAL: After winning the adidas Cal Legacy Classic,California (3-0-1) will face San Francisco (1-1-1) at the Bay Area Classic, Friday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium. The Golden Bears return home to finish the tournament against No. 7 Santa Clara (3-1-0), Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
BEARS WIN NINTH-ANNUAL ADIDAS CAL LEGACY CLASSIC: California won the ninth-annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic for the second year in a row last weekend at Edwards Stadium. The Bears defeated Vanderbilt (2-1-0), 3-0, Firday and tied Cal State Northridge (3-0-1), 1-1, Sunday. The shutout over the Commodores was Cal's third this season. Cal State Northridge came in second, while Stanford placed third and Vanderbilt took fourth. Last year Cal defeated San Diego, 1-0, and San Jose State, 2-0, to claim the tournament title.
FOUR SENIORS EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Four Cal seniors earned all-tournament honors last weekend, including goalkeeper Eric Kronberg, forward Calen Carr, midfileder Pieter Berger and defender Tyson Wahl. Other members of the 11 player team include Cal State Northridge's Kevin Guppy, Matt Tracy and Willie Sims. Earning spots from Stanford were Michael Brown and Marcus Ryan. Vanderbilt completes the team with Brian Mascarenhas and Kenny Schoeni.
LOOKING AT THE POLLS: Cal is ranked as high as No. 6 in the NSCAA poll, whileSoccer America hs the Bears tabbed at No. 8.
CAL STRONG AT HOME OPENER: The Bears defeated Vanderbilt, 3-0, Friday to kick off the adidas Cal Legacy Classic. Wahl scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 47th minute off a penalty kick. About 10 minutes later, Wahl assisted Berger on Cal's second goal in the 58th minute. Sophomore forward Javier Hil insured the Bears' victory over the Commodores, scoring Cal's third goal in the 78th minute. Cal tied Cal State Northridge Sunday, 1-1. Senior forward Alec de Mattos put the Mattadors ahead, 1-0, in the 61st minute, while Cal answered in the 76th minute to tie the score, 1-1. Both teams had last minute chances to score in the second overtime but fell short.
SENIOR GOALKEEPER STRONG FOR BEARS: Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg was strong on defense for the Bears last weekend, recording 12 saves bringing his career total to 79. Kronberg played 195:00 minutes for the Bears, while junior goalkeeper Mike Oseguera made his first appearance of the season. Oseguera stepped in for Kronberg against Vanderbilt with five minutes remaining and recorded one save.
WAHL MVP OF TOURNAMENT: Tyson Wahl was named the 2005 adidas Cal Legay Tournament MVP. Wahl scored the game-winning goal against Vanderbilt Friday, which was the first of his career. The senior defender also assisted Berger on Cal's second goal of the game.
WAHL EARNS PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tyosn Wahl has been awarded Pac-10 Player of the Week for his performance last weekend at the adidas Cal Legacy Classic. This is Wahl's first weekly honor and eighth all-time player of the week honor for the Bears.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
SAN FRANCISCO: The 2005 Dons are currently 1-1-1 for the season. Junior midfielder Robert Smith scored the game-winning goal against Dominican University, Sept. 1 and has one assist for the season. Sophomore defender Rob Valentino, sophomore defender Jordan Keyes and Smith all lead the team in scoring with one goal.
SANTA CLARA: The seventh ranked Santa Clara Broncos defeated Georgetown, 4-0, Sunday at the Maryland/adidas Classic. Junior forward Keith DeVay scored twice for the Broncos and leads the team with four goals for the season. The Bronocos are currently 3-1-0.
