Men's Tennis Wraps Up Napa Valley Tennis Classic

MEADOWOOD - The California men's tennis team wrapped up their first tournament of the 2005 fall season at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, Calif., at the Meadowood Resort. On Saturday, the Golden Bears faced both single players from Illinois and Georgia, and in doubles they squared against pairs from UNC and Georgia. On Sunday, the singles ran in a round robin format with Cal facing primarily Illinois singles.

Individually on Saturday, Senior Dean Wallace defeated Illinois' Brandon Davis (6-3, 6-3). Freshman Tore Deleuran collected a win when he defeated Georgia's Josh Varela (7-5, 6-2). Also recording a victory freshman Eoin Heavey outlasted UNC's Aly Mandour (7-6(3), 6-3). Junior John Pettit tallied a victory against the Tar Heels when he defeated Will Plyler (6-3, 6-1). Junior Tyler Browne captured a win after defeating Georgia's Colin Purcell (7-5, 6-2). Sophomore Ken Nakahara grabbed his first win of the season when he beat UNC's Karl Wishart (7-6(3), 6-1). Junior Daniel Sebescen also secured a victory against Georgia when he defeated Ricardo Gonzales (7-6(2), 6-4). Georgia's Matic Omerzel got the best of senior Lennart Maack (7-5, 6-2), and Jirou Nakajima fell to Illinois' Ryan Rowe (6-1, 6-1).

The Bears also competed in doubles on Saturday, where Cal won two matches. The freshman dynamic duo of Heavey and Deleuran defeated UNC's Carlotti and Stone (8-6). Pettit and Nakahara defeated Georgia's John and Jason Verela 8-4. Seniors Wallace and Maack fell to Georgia's Purcell and Strahinja Bobusic (8-2). Georgia's Gonzales and Omerzel also handed to Sebescen and Browne a loss (8-4).

In Sunday's singles, Maack defeated Illinois' Marc Spicijarci (2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4). Heavey collected his third win when he defeated Illinois' Brandon Davis (6-2, 6-2). Falling to the Illini were Dean Wallace who was defeated by Ruben Gonzales (6-2, 6-1), Deeleuran fell to Ryan Rowe (6-2, 6-1), Sebescen dropped a match to Kevin Anderson (6-1, 6-0), Nakahara fell to Monte Tucker (6-4, 6-2) and Browne was defeated by Ryler DeHeart (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).

The Bears travel next to the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oka., on Oct. 3-9.
