NEWS AND NOTES
Arizona started off its weekend at the Princeton Invitational by defeating 2004 College Cup semifinalist, Princeton, 2-1, snapping the Tigers' home field winning streak at 19 ... UA also nabbed a 4-0 win over Penn on Sat., Sept. 10 to claim the tourney title ... The Wildcats are now 3-1-1 on the season and ranked as high as 22nd in the NSCAA poll ... Senior midfielder Nikki David scored one goal and added three assists, notching six points on the weekend ... Arizona will take on No. 18 Utah on Fri., Sept. 16 and New Mexico on Sun., Sept. 18 in its own Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic in Tucson.
Arizona State improved to 4-2 on the season with a 3-1 win over Syracuse on Fri., Sept. 9 and a 4-1 defeat of Auburn two days later ... The Sun Devils outscored their opponents, 7-2 on the weekend ... Senior midfielder Manya Makoski scored three goals and added one assist, becoming only the sixth Sun Devil to record 60 or more career points ... Makoski, named Co-Offensive MVP of the New Mexico Tournament, also moved into second place in the ASU record books for career assists with 18, six shy of the school record ... The Sun Devils head to Hanover, N.H. to compete in the Dartmouth Tournament, taking on Villanova on Fri., Sept. 16 and host Big Green on Sun., Sept. 18.
California remains the only team in the Conference without a loss ... The Bears, ranked as high as 8th in the latest NSCAA poll, defeated Dartmouth, 1-0 in double overtime and SMU, 5-0 to come away unblemished at the Saint Mary's Classic ... Cal sits atop the Pac-10 with a 5-0-1 record, its best start since the 2000 squad went 8-0 to begin the year ... Senior forward Liz Eisenberg scored both game-winning goals over the weekend ... Eisenberg leads the team in goals (5), points (10) and game-winning goals (4) ... Head coach Kevin Boyd secured his 100th career win at the helm of the Cal program in the team's 1-0 win over Dartmouth ... Boyd is the winningest women's soccer coach in school history ... Next up for Cal will be a mid-week contest against Pacific on Wed., Sept. 14, before taking on No. 4 Santa Clara on Sun., Sept. 18.
Oregon surpassed last years' win total with its fourth and fifth victories of the season, a 2-0 defeat of Elon on Fri., Sept. 9 and a 1-0 shutout over North Carolina State on Sun., Sept. 11, its first win over an ACC opponent in school history ... The Ducks are currently 5-1-1 on the year, which also marks the best start in school history ... Senior forward Nicole Garbin scored all three Oregon goals over the weekend, including the game-winning goal against NC State, the fifth such game-winner of her career which sets the Oregon single-season school record ... Freshman goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield made one save against the Wolfpack, recording her school-record tying fourth shutout on the year ... The Ducks will take this week off before returning to action Fri., Sept. 23 against South Dakota State in Eugene.
Oregon State pulled off a stunner on Sun., Sept. 11 as it defeated No. 8 Wake Forest, 2-1, to improve to 4-1 overall and find itself in the national rankings with a No. 23 spot in Soccer America's poll ... The win marks the third consecutive year that the Beavers have beaten a top-15 ranked team ... Junior midfielder Jen Crump and sophomore midfielder Jetta Sadusky both scored in the match ... OSU held Wake, who came into the contest averaging more than three goals a game, to just two second-half shot attempts, holding on for the win ... Next up for the Beavers is their own OSU Nike Invitational in which they will face Long Island on Fri., Sept. 16 and VCU on Sun., Sept. 18 in Corvallis.
Stanford went head-to-head with the best team in the nation on Sun., Sept 11, according to Soccer America, but could not come away with the win as North Carolina got the 4-0 victory ... The Cardinal also notched a 1-all tie against Illinois on Fri., Sept. 9, the first day of the USF Tournament ... Stanford is now 2-2-1 on the season, good enough for an even .500 clip ... Senior midfielder Leah Tapscott scored the lone goal for the team on the weekend ... Both Tapscott and Hayley Hunt were recognized on the all-tournament team ... Freshman goalkeeper Alex Gamble picked up five saves in 66 minutes against the Tar Heels ... Stanford will next hit the road to compete in the First Tennessee Classic against the host Volunteers on Fri., Sept. 16 and Texas A&M on Sun., Sept. 18.
UCLA hosted its own Women's Cup over the weekend, coming away with a 2-0 shutout over Colorado on Sun., Sept. 11, but falling short in a 1-0 double overtime loss to Penn State to open the weekend ... The Bruins are now 5-1 on the year ... Sophomore goalkeeper Valerie Henderson turned in a solid performance in the net, nabbing three saves in 90 minutes of action against the Buffaloes ... Freshman forward Kara Lang led the team with six shots against fourth-ranked Penn State ... UCLA is ranked sixth in all three of the latest polls ... The Bruins will head north to face No. 4 Santa Clara on Fri., Sept. 16 and Saint Mary's on Sun., Sept. 18.
USC competed in the UCLA Women's Cup over the weekend, picking up a 2-0 shutout over Colorado to open play on Fri., Sept. 9, but could not hold on against fourth-ranked Penn State, as the Nittany Lions defeated the Women of Troy, 3-1 ... USC is now 3-2 on the year and ranked as high as 22nd in the Soccer Buzz poll ... Jocelyn Hein and Meagan Holmes scored both goals in the shutout, while Amy Rodriguez picked up the lone goal against PSU ... USC will compete in the Loyola Marymount Tournament against Georgia on Fri., Sept. 16 and Oakland on Sun., Sept. 18.
Washington played two close matches against ranked teams but could not hold on as it was edged, 1-0 by No. 19 West Virginia and 2-1 by No. 11 Wisconsin at the Portland Tournament ... With the losses, UW falls to 0-4-2 on the year ... All four defeats have come by one-goal margins ... Freshman forward Melissa Beal scored the lone goal against the Badgers and now owns three of five Husky goals in 2005 ... Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen stopped four shots in the same match ... Washington hits the road this week to face Texas A&M and Tennessee in the First Tennessee Classic on Fri., Sept. 16 and Sun., Sept. 18, respectively.
Washington State dropped its lone match last week against No. 8 Wake Forest in a 2-1 decision ... The Cougars are now 3-2 on the year ... Sophomore midfielder Anna Miller scored the WSU goal on a free kick 20 yards out, the first of her Cougar career ... Washington State outshot the Demon Deacons, 12-9 but could not come away with the win ... Next up for the Cougars will be a Fri., Sept. 16 match against VCU and a Sun., Sept. 18 contest against Long Island in the OSU Nike Invitational in Corvallis.
