Three nationally-ranked teams will help comprise a quality field at this year's Stanford Invitational (Sept. 15-17) at Maples Pavilion ... On Sept. 15, following a 5 p.m. match between 24th ranked UC Santa Barbara (3-3) and Utah State (4-4), the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal (8-1) will host Bay Area rival and 23th ranked St. Mary's (6-1) in a 7 p.m. match ... On Sept. 16 at 5 p.m., St. Mary's will face UC Santa Barbara, followed at 7 p.m. between Stanford and Utah State ... On Sept. 17 at 5 p.m., Stanford will face UC Santa Barbara, followed at 7 p.m. between St. Mary's and Utah State.
On Saturday's match between Stanford and UCSB at 5 p.m., Cardinal fans will be offered free admission by presenting your football ticket at the gates at Maples Pavilion ... At 7 p.m., the Stanford football team will host UC Davis at Stanford Stadium ... Stanford fans will be given a free Pizza Chicago magnet.
Stanford will be accepting donations toward relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina at upcoming Cardinal women's volleyball matches ... That will include the Stanford Invitational (Sept. 15-17) and matches against USC (Sept. 23) and UCLA (Sept. 24) at Maples Pavilion ... Boxes will be manned at venue entrances to collect public donations, which will go to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort.
With enthusiasm for the women's volleyball program at an all-time high, season tickets for Stanford Women's Volleyball are now on sale ... John Dunning is in his fifth season as head coach of the Stanford Cardinal ... Under Dunning's direction, the Cardinal has won two NCAA titles (2001, 2004) and produced a runnerup finish in 2002 ... His Stanford record is 128-21 (.859) against the toughest collegiate competition in the United States ... Dunning's career mark (16 seasons at Pacific, 4+ seasons at Stanford) is 565-123 (.821) ... Dunning has chalked up 30 or more wins in three of his four seasons at Stanford ... That included 33 wins in 2001, 32 wins in 2002, and 30 wins in Stanford's NCAA championship season last year.
A seven-match winning streak has stretched Stanford's season record to 8-1 as it begins play this week in the Stanford Invitational (Sept. 15-17) ... During the current winning streak which included three wins at the Boston College Invitatioal (Sept. 1-3), a Sept. 6 win at New Hampshire, and three wins at the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 8-10), the Cardinal generated a .341 hitting percentage while holding the opposition to a .158 hitting mark ... Stanford won 21 of 22 games during the recent road trip ... Stanford has won the last four matches by a 3-0 margin ... In all, six of Stanford's eight wins have been recorded in three games ... Offensively, Stanford is hitting .306 compared to .126 for its opponents.
Only nine matches (8-1) into the 2005 season and the Cardinal defense has served notice that it is tough ... The Cardinal has held the opposition to only a .126 hitting percentage, and in two of those matches (Boston College, Maine), the Cardinal held the opposition to a minus hitting percentage ... In four matches, Stanford opponents had a hitting percentage of less than .100.
Two freshmen, Foluke Akinradewo and Cynthia Barboza have quickly established themselves as impact players on this year's Cardinal ... Akinradewo and Barboza have started all nine matches and combined for 237 kills and a .382 hitting percentage ... Akinradewo leads the team in both kills (122) and hitting percentage (.448, #4 in the Pac-10) while Barboza is second in kills (115) and second among starters in hitting percentage (.326) ... Akinradewo has been nearly unstoppable ... During Stanford's seven match road trip to the East Coast and the Midwest, Akinradewo chalked up 94 kills in 152 attempts for a .618 hitting percentage along with 24 blocks, 14 digs and three service aces ... Akinradewo hit no lower than .450 during those seven matches, and hit .500 in five of those matches ... Akinradewo has double-digits in kills in seven of the nine matches ... Akinradewo was named tournament MVP at the Colorado Invitational ... Barboza has produced a hitting percentage of .450 or better in three matches, and has produced double-digit numbers in kills in six of the team's nine season matches ... Barboza has collected three double-doubles (kills, digs) in three matches.
Only nine matches into her freshman season, Foluke Akinradewo is playing like a first team All-American ... For her efforts in leading the third-ranked Stanford Cardinal to four victories from Sept. 5-11, Akinradewo has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week ... In victories at New Hampshire (Sept. 6) and at the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 8-10, Colorado, Marquette, Creighton), Akinradewo collected 52 kills in 90 attemptes for a .578 hitting percentage ... Akinradewo has tallied ten blocks and five digs ... Akinradewo was named MVP of the Colorado Invitational as she collected 43 kills in 74 attempts for a .486 hitting percentage in three wins ... Over the four-match stretch, Akinradewo hit .450 or better in each contest.
Sophomore setter Bryn Kehoe and freshman middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo were honored along with junior outside hitter Kristin Richards at the recent Boston College Invitational (Sept. 1-3) and the Colorado Invitational ... Kehoe collected 126 assists, 35 digs, eleven blocks, seven service aces and six kills in helping lead the Cardinal to three victories at the Boston College Invitational (Sept. 1-3) ... Kehoe is second in the Pac-10 in assists (13.67 apg) ... Kehoe's 64 assists vs Penn State (8/26/05) is a Pac-10 season best ... Akinradewo tallied 43 kills (.486 hitting percentage), six blocks and five digs in helping the Cardinal to victories over Colorado, Marquette and Creighton at the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 8-10) ... Richards was named to the all-tournament team both the Boston College Invitational and the Colorado Invitational.
Kristin Richards, the All-American junior outside hitter, is approaching the 1,000 mark in both career kills and career digs ... Richards has 985 career kills and 939 career digs ... Richards is approaching the Stanford career Top-10 in kills now occupied by Nancy Reno (1984-87) with 1,221 ... Richards also is approaching the Top-10 school list in career digs with the tenth position occupied by Teresa Smith (1984-87) with 1,019 ... Sophomore setter Bryn Kehoe has collected 2,047 assists in only one-plus seasons at Stanford, good enough for seventh on the Stanford Top-10 list ... Kehoe is nearing fifth place all-time at Stanford where Piper Hahn (1990-93) resides with 2,084 assists, and sixth place where Cary Wendell (1992-95) had 2,073 assists ... Katie Goldhahn has 1,689 career assists, eighth-best in school history.
Stanford believes in seeing all parts of the United States ... In 2000, Stanford started the year with nine road matches, and the following year, the Cardinal played its first eleven matches away from Maples Pavilion ... This year, the defending NCAA champion Stanford Cardinal gathered extensive frequent flier miles during the first three weeks of the 2005 season ... The Cardinal began the season with two matches at the AVCA/NACWAA Showcase in Omaha, Ne (August 26-27) and then traveled cross country to the Boston College Invitational (Sept. 1-3), a road match at New Hampshire (Sept. 6) and then back to the Midwest to the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 8-10) ... Stanford went 8-1 during those two extensive road trips.
Junior outside hitter Nji Nnamaji collected a career-high 13 kills against Penn State (8/26/05) in the season opener, and then a career-high 31 attempts against Nebraska (8/27/05) ... Jennifer Wilson, a junior outside hitter, had a career-high nine kills against Syracuse (9/3/05) ... Kristin Richards' four aces against Syracuse (9/3/05) is a career-high ... Franci Girard collected a career-high 25 attempts against Penn State (8/25/05).
St. Mary's Story
The Gaels of St. Mary's are off to a fast start at 6-1, and ranked 23rd in the nation ... The Gaels began the season with a 3-0 victory over Arizona State ... Kaui Salzman (All-WCC in 2004) and Missie Stidham lead the St. Mary's attack with 93 and 91 kills, respectively ... All-WCC setter Mandy Bible is averaging 11.78 assists per game ... St. Mary's enjoyed its best season in school history in 2004 with a 25-4 record, and an appearance in the third round of the NCAA Tournament ... Rob Browning is in his first season at St. Mary's.
Utah State is 4-4 ... The Aggies are predicted to finish fifth in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) ... Senior opposite side hitter Zuzana Cernianska is closing in on the all-time kills record at Utah State as she currently has 1,386 kills during her career ... Amy Crosbie holds the all-itme record with 1,463 kills set from 1997-2000 ... Cernianska also ranks in the Utah State Top 10 in career service aces, attempts, digs, hitting percentage and assists ... Libero Kelsi Peterson tied a school record with 30 digs in USU's five game loss to Utah ... Melissa Larson, a freshman middle blocker, hails from Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton ... Burt Fuller is in his fifth season as head coach at Utah State with a 65-61 record.
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are 3-3 and ranked 24th in the nation ... Janine Sandell leads the Gauho attack with 116 kills ... Sandell's 5.80 kills per game leads the Big West Conference ... The team's starting setter is Ashley Dutro who is averaging 10.35 apg ... Kathy Gregory is in her 31st season at UCSB with a record of 747-310.
