Bruins Blank Penn State, 1-0, In Men's Soccer
Sept. 16, 2005
The No. 5/17 UCLA men's soccer team earned its third consecutive shutout, defeating Penn State, 1-0, in front of 4,017 at Penn State Friday evening. Senior midfielder Jonathan Bornstein scored the game's only goal at 74:58, and junior goalkeeper Eric Reed recorded his third shutout in a row for the Bruins.
UCLA was outshot in the game, 14-4, but received outstanding goalkeeping from Reed, who had five saves, and capitalized on its only shot of the second half. In the 75th minute, Marvell Wynne threw the ball in to Kamani Hill at the top of the Penn State box. Hill one-timed it to a charging Bornstein in the box, and the senior hit a left-footed shot past Penn State keeper Conrad Taylor from six yards out. It was all the offense UCLA needed, as Reed kept his scoreless streak intact. He has not allowed a goal in 270 minutes played this season.
The Bruins (3-1) will face Ohio State (4-1) on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 12 pm ET for the championship of the Penn State Nike Classic. Ohio State defeated Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in overtime earlier Friday. Penn State (0-4-1) will face Cal State Fullerton (0-3-1) at 2 pm.
