Huskies Fall to #19 Texas A&M in Women's Soccer
Sept. 16, 2005
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Laura Probst amassed two goals and two assists after halftime Friday as 19th-ranked Texas A&M scored five second-half goals to defeat Washington 6-0 in the first round of the First Tennessee Classic women's soccer tournament at the Tennessee Soccer Complex.
The Huskies' record dropped to 0-5-2 with their most lopsided loss ever. UW had never before surrendered six goals to an opponent. Prior to Friday the Huskies had played close in all of their games, losing by just one goal in each of their first four setbacks.
'It was just one of those things where you play so many one-goal games and something like this happens,' said UW coach Lesle Gallimore. 'Maybe it needed to happen for us to wake up and realize it's not good enough to just show up and play people close.'
The Aggies (4-1-1) scored 12 minutes into the game and carried only that 1-0 lead into halftime despite outshooting UW 11-2. Melissa Garey collected a shot that caromed off the crossbar and booted it into the goal at 11:47.
The Huskies did not get a shot off in the second half while Texas A&M converted four of its 12 attempts to break the game open. The Aggies were successful on their first two shots after halftime as Garey scored at 47:05 and Paige Carmichael found the net at 48:06.
Probst assisted on both of those goals before netting one of her own at 53:37. Following a goal by Ashlee Pistorius at 59:05, Probst capped the scoring with a looping shot over UW goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) at 61:56.
'I feel bad for Kelsey because she played well and this was clearly not a six-goals-against performance,' Gallimore said. 'We have to get better going forward because you can't defend forever.'
Rasmussen was credited with five saves before being replaced in the 78th minute. Sophomore Lizzy Showman (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) made her UW debut and faced only one shot without needing to make a save.
The Huskies remain in Knoxville to meet Tennessee on Sunday. UW's next home action is Sunday, Sept. 25 against Gonzaga at 4 p.m.
