Volleyball defeats Valparaiso, 3-2

MADISON, Wis. - The 11th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team won its third five-game match of the young 2005 season on Friday night at the InnTowner Invitational in Madison, Wis., defeating Valparaiso 30-28, 21-30, 24-30, 30-24, 15-9. Freshman outside hitter Kaitlin Sather led the Bruins with 22 kills in the match while Nana Meriwether chipped in with 15 kills and 10 blocks in the contest.
The Bruins opened the evening hitting .196 with 18 kills to Valparaiso's .024 team attack percentage, winning the opening game 30-28. The game featured nine ties and two lead changes. UCLA hit negative in the second game with 16 errors and just 13 kills while Valparaiso hit .167 and won the game 30-21.
The Crusaders took a two games to one advantage with a 30-24 victory in the third game of the match, hitting .333 to UCLA's .208. There was just one lead change and four tie scores in the third game of the match. UCLA came back to win game four and send the match to a fifth and deciding game, holding the Crusaders to a .000 team attack percentage in game four, a game that had three tie scores and two lead changes..
In game five, the Bruins were an offensive juggernaut, downing 11 kills on 18 attacks with just one error for a .556 attack percentage, taking the game and the match with a 15-9 win.
UCLA out-dug the Crusaders by a 79-67 margin and recorded 75 kills to Valpo's 53.
Offensively, UCLA was led by Kaitlin Sather with 22 kills. She was joined in double-figures by Nancy Barba and Nana Meriwether who had 15 kills apiece. Meriwether was UCLA's block leader 10 blocks, three solo and seven assists. Three Bruins had double-figure digs in the match led by setter Nellie Spicer with 18 and followed by Colby Lyman with 15 and Jade Machado with 14.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday with a 3 pm PT match against Valparaiso.
