Haley Paul Wins Sundodger Cross Country Invite
Sept. 17, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - Cougar sophomore Haley Paul was the individual winner and led the Washington State women's cross country team to a third-place finish at the University of Washington's Sundodger Invitational Meet held Saturday morning at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.
Paul, from Phoenix, Ariz., ran the 6000m course in a time of 20-minutes, 50 seconds. Three Cougar teammates had top-20 finishes as Meghan Leonard (Newberg, Ore.) finished 11th, Isley Gonzalez 17th and Collier Lawrence 20th. Kelly Ramirez was the final Cougar scorer at 29th overall.
'Haley Paul looked great winning her first major collegiate race with some pretty good runners and pretty good teams,' WSU Head Coach Jason Drake said. 'She ran a smart race and moved to 10th at the mile, rolled people off and looked good and strong at the finish. I was happy with every one of our top four runners. Megan Leonard's 11th place was a nice finish for her. I was pretty pleased with Isley Gonzalez and Collier Lawrence running where we expected them. It was excited to see them running well but we have some work to do to catch the other teams.'
Washington won the women's team title with a score of 53 while UCLA was second at 64 and WSU third with 73 points. Idaho's women finished fourth with 109.
The Cougar men's team finished fourth with 95 points behind Washington (39), Portland (66), and UCLA (72).
WSU's Mike Heidt and Andrew Jones finished fifth and 11th, respectively, but did not count in the team standing because they were running unattached. Heidt (Selah) only has track season eligibility remaining and Jones will probably redshirt this cross country season.
Redshirt freshmen Woody Favinger (Bellingham) and Drew Polley (Port Orchard) were the top men's finishers at 14th (24:24) and 15th (24:26). Chris Concha (27th), Chris Williams (32nd) and Ryan Freimuth (38th) rounded out the top five Cougar finishers.
'Woody Favinger and Drew Polley ran well after looking pretty good in practice but it was good to see them come out and look good in the debut of their redshirt freshman years,' Drake said after the men's invitational race. 'Both ran way-faster than a year ago. Chris Concha ran faster than he thought he could. Ryan Freimuth and Justin Ireland had average days but for middle distance runners they ran pretty well, especially Freimuth with little training.'
The Washington State cross country teams will compete next at the Montana Invitational Meet, Oct. 1 at Missoula.
