Burduli Captures Singles Title at Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State tennis sophomore Ekaterina Burduli took home the No. 1 singles championship during the final day at the Cougar Classic. Burduli was joined by teammates Marjolein van de Ven, Amy Toth, and Bianca Selaru in tournament finals.
The Tel Aviv, Israel native Burduli bested Jana Mackova of Boise State to capture the title. Burduli dominated tournament play by not allowing an opponent to win more than 3 games. Mackova gave Burduli her toughest match, but still won 6-3 6-2. Burduli was given the preseason rank of No. 45 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
WSU junior van de Ven (Delft, Netherlands) took home second place in the No. 2 singles bracket. Boise State's Tatiana Ganzha got the best of van de Ven by defeating her 7-6 1-6 6-0. Ganzha won the first set in a heartbreaker, but van de Ven stormed in the second set to even the match. Ganzha ended the match with a solid run to giver her the No. 2 singles championship.
WSU duo Toth (Mississauga, Ontario) and Selaru (Zalau, Romania) earned second place as well. The teammates had a tough match against Ganzha and Mackova of Boise State in the No. 1 doubles. The match was won by the Boise State duo 8-6.
'I was impressed in some areas and feel we still have a lot to work on,' WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. 'We're looking forward to getting back to practice to work on the areas we need to improve.'
The tennis team will be traveling to College Park, Md. They will participate in the Maryland Invitational Friday September 23 to Sunday September 25.
