No. 6 Cal edges out No. 7 Santa Clara, 1-0

Sept. 18, 2005

BERKELEY - The No. 6 California men's soccer team defeated No. 7 Santa Clara, 1-0, in an exciting game that was decided in the last minutes, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears wrap up the Bay Area Classic 2-0. Cal improves to 5-0-1, while Santa Clara moves to 4-2.

'It was an exciting game and a great game between two excellent teams,' said head coach Kevin Grimes. 'I thought both teams played extremely well and hard. You could tell the game was going to be decided by a single goal. Calen (Carr) had a good weekend for us; he played well in both games. He wants to continue to improve and get better each week just as our team does.'

Both teams went scoreless in the first half and most of the second half, until senior forward Calen Carr came up big for the Bears at the end of the game. In the 86th minute sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano threw the ball into play. Carr was positioned in front of the goal and headed into the net for his third game-winning goal of the season.

Both teams had eleven shots for the day, while Carr took six for the Bears. Carr currently leads the team in scoring with four goals for the season.

Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded his fourth shutout for the season and tallied his 25th save.

The Bears travel to Stanford next weekend for the Stanford/ Nike Invitational. Cal will face Army, Friday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. and the University of Alabama-Birmingham at noon on Sunday, Sept. 25. The games will be played at Maloney Field.
