No. 8 Cal Edged By No. 4 Santa Clara, 2-1, in Double OT
Sept. 18, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 8 California couldn't hang on to a 1-0 halftime lead, as the Golden Bears lost to No. 4 Santa Clara, 2-1, in double overtime Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Cal fell to 6-1-1 with its first setback of 2005, while Santa Clara improved to 5-1-1.
Senior forward Liz Eisenberg gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with her sixth goal of the season in the fourth minute. Junior forward Julia Schnugg passed the ball to senior forward Dania Cabello who found Eisenberg deep inside the Broncos' penalty area. The assists were Cabello's third of the year and 16th of her career, moving her into sixth all-time in school history for assists. It was Schnugg's second assist of the season.
Santa Clara defender Micaela Esquival tied the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute on a 22-yard shot from the left side of the field. Hayley Siegel was credited with the assist.
The Bears began their fourth overtime game of the season trailing 8-6 on shots. Santa Clara finished the game with an 11-8 shot advantage.
Schnugg almost won the game for Cal in the 103rd minute but her long shot went off the far post. Junior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami posted the Bears' other overtime shot.
SCU reserve forward Tina Estrada started the final 10-minute overtime period on the bench but re-entered the game with 5:35 on the clock. About three and a half minutes later, Estrada received a pass from Jordan Angeli and freed herself by dribbling around several Cal defenders. Estrada's 15-yard shot found the back of the net for the game winner.
Cal leaves the Bay Area for the first time this season next weekend. The Bears travel to Brigham Young Friday, Sept. 23 and to Utah Sunday, Sept. 25.
