Bruin Women to Run at Griak CC Invitational on Saturday in St. Paul, MN

Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Sept. 24) will run in the 20th annual Roy Griak Invitational, held at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul, MN and hosted by the University of Minnesota.
In the 6000m women's event, that begins at 10:10 a.m. (PT), along with the Bruins, other top squads competing include (preseason rankings) - No. 7 Providence, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, No. 18 Princeton, No. 23 Indiana, No. 26 North Carolina, No. 28 Marquette and No. 29 Yale.
One of the top collegiate cross country events in the Midwest, the Griak Invite consistently attracts the nation's top-ranked squads. In the men's 8000m event that will start at 9:20 a.m. (PT), along with UCLA, teams involved include (preseason rankings) - No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 15 Butler, No. 16 Iowa, No. 25 host Minnesota, No. 27 Michigan and No. 30 Michigan State.
Running for the Bruins at the Griak Invite on Saturday will be - seniors, Sarah West, Lori Mann and Leslie Barrie; junior Ashley Caldwell; sophomores, Claire Rethmeier and Monika Rothenburger and freshmen, Lindsay delaMontaigne, Ciara Viehweg and Lauren Jirges,Last Saturday (Sept. 17) at the Sundodger Invite, the Bruin women finished second in the team standings and had three runners place in the Top 10 over the 6000m course -Caldwell (3rd/21:04), Rethmeier (5th/21:15) and Rothenburger (10th/21:27). Placing 18th was delaMontaigne (21:48).
'Our Top Four runners ran very well at the Sundodger,' Peterson said. 'Our race plan was to run the first half of the course conservatively, then run the second half very aggressively. All four of them ran the race plan extremely well.'Peterson on Monday also announced that seniors, Jenna Timinsky and Allison Hall, along with junior Alison Costello, will be redshirting the 2005 cross country campaign. Sophomore Olga Aulet-Leon is still recuperating from a torn calf muscle suffered at last spring's Pac-10 Outdoor Track & Field meet (while running the 1500m preliminary).
