Women's Tennis Prepares for Cal Invitational

The California women's tennis team looks to get its fall season underway next weekend when it hosts the second annual Cal Invitational. Matches begin Friday, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. and will conclude Sunday, Oct. 2. The action will take place all day on Hellman Courts.
Participating teams include the University of North Carolina, which finished 11th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings last season, 13th-place finishers Fresno State and Arizona State, which finished ranked 29th. Other teams include Duke, Texas Christian University, Bringham Young University, Arizona, Saint Mary's, New Mexico, Santa Clara, Sacramento State, UC Davis and the University of San Francisco.
California, which finished 21st last season, will feature sophomore Suzi Babos. Babos is currently ranked No. 2 in the ITA 2005-06 preseason women's tennis rankings. Last year, the Sopron, Hungary, native earned 2005 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Babos ended the 2005 season with a 33-10 overall record, capturing the singles titles at both the Cal Nike Invitational and the ITA West Regional Championships.
Cal will also feature transfer Zsuzsanna Fodor, who is currently ranked No. 12 in the ITA 2005-06 preseason women's tennis rankings. Fodor joins the Bears after spending last season at Mississippi State University, where she earned 2005 Freshman of the Year honors for the SEC conference.
Other athletes that will be featured at the tournament include third ranked Nicole Leimbach of TCU, Daniela Bercek of Duke who is currently ranked fifth, 14th-ranked Margarita Karnaukhova of Sacramento State, Helena Besovic of TCU (21) and Maja Kovacek of New Mexico (30).
