Swimmers Coughlin, Hardy Nominated for National Awards

Sept. 24, 2005

Former Cal swimmer Natalie Coughlin and freshman Jessica Hardy have each been nominated for a Golden Goggle award. The second annual award banquet, which recognizes the nation's top swimmers, will be held Nov. 14 in Manhattan.

Coughlin, who won five medals at the XI FINA World Championships this summer, is up for Female Athlete of the Year. Hardy, who set a world record in the semifinal of the women's 100-meter breaststroke at the World Championships (1:06.20), has been nominated for Breakout Performer of the Year.

The public is invited to vote online at www.usaswimming.org/votegoldengoggles to give their input on the best performances of 2005. Voting began Sept. 22 and will continue through November.
