No. 4 Cal Routs Army, 5-0

Sept. 25, 2005

STANFORD - The No. 4 California men's soccer team routed Army, 5-0, Sunday afternoon to conclude the Stanford Nike Invitational. The Golden Bears won the tournament, recording their fourth consecutive tournament victory.

The Bears improve to 6-0-1 for the season while Army drops to 1-7. Cal tabbed its sixth consecutive non-conference victory and will face its first Pac-10 opponent next weekend.

Senior defender Tyson Wahl got the Bears off to a strong start at the beginning of the game when he scored off a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Wahl scored his second game-winning goal of the season and tallied his third goal this year.

Senior forward Calen Carr was once again active around the net when he scored Cal's second goal in the 26th minute. Carr was centered on the goal and in close proximity when sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano passed him the ball. Carr found the open net from five yards back and sank the ball past Army's goalkeeper, Andrew Filauro. Carr recorded his sixth goal of the season and surpassed his total of five from 2004.

Army's defense proved to be no threat to the Bears who scored again just four minutes later. Andrew Jacobson put Cal ahead of the Black Knights, 3-0, in the 30th minute. Steve Purdy, a junior midfielder, passed the ball to Jacobson who scored from 25 yards back.

Purdy was once again fierce on offense, scoring in the 34th minute to put the Bears up, 4-0, heading into half time. The San Jose native scored off of a free kick from 20 yards back and recorded the first goal of his career.

Junior forward Matt Holtrust, a player that has seen limited action this season, capped Cal's scoring when he scored the first goal of his career and the fifth for the Bears. Holtrust got an open look on the right side and drilled that ball past Army's goalkeeper. Seconds later Holtrust was issued a yellow caution card.

Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded two saves for the Bears and tallied 45 minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Myers made his career debut this afternoon, recording one save and playing 45 minutes.

With the comfortable lead, head coach Kevin Grimes chose to sub. Seeing action were sophomore defender Jeff Serafini, freshman midfielfer Ryan Villalpando and junior goalkeeper Mike Oseguera.

The Bears go on the road next weekend when they face UCLA Friday, Sept. 30 and San Diego State, Sunday, Oct. 2 in their first Pac-10 meetings of the season.
