No. 9 Cal Blanks Utah, 1-0, in Double OT
Sept. 25, 2005
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Senior forward Dania Cabello scored the golden goal in the 107th minute to lift No. 9 California to a 1-0 victory over Utah Sunday afternoon at Ute Field
The Bears snapped a two-game losing streak - both losses to top 15 opponents - and improved to 7-2-1 with the win. Cal is 3-1-1 in overtime contests in 2005. The Utes fell to 7-3, suffering their second loss to a ranked team in the last 10 days. Utah fell in overtime at then-No. 22 Arizona, 1-0, on Sept. 16.
Cal held a 4-1 shot advantage in the final overtime stanza. Before scoring the decisive goal, Cabello missed a header to the right and a shot to the left of the frame in the first minute and a half of the final overtime period.
Junior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami connected down field with junior midfielder Beth DeAraujo, who found Cabello behind the Ute defense. Cabello took the ball down the middle of the box and slotted the winning shot to the left side of the net past goalkeeper Ashley Mason. The goal was Cabello's fourth overall and second-game winner of the season. The assists were Al-Lami's and DeAraujo's first of the year.
Utah out shot Cal, 14-11, for the game. Mason and Cal's Ashley Sulprizio each recorded three saves. The shutout was Sulprizio's fourth of the year and 14th of her career.
The Bears take next week off before starting Pac-10 play at home against Washington Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m. at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley.
