Final Stats

SEATTLE - Nanda McCormick's 19th-minute goal Sunday lifted Gonzaga to its first-ever victory over Washington in women's soccer, a 1-0 decision at Husky Soccer Field.

McCormick netted her team-leading fifth goal at 18:54. Christine Soma dribbled down the right flank and crossed the ball to McCormick who was un-marked in the left side of the box. McCormick booted a 12-yard shot past UW goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen (Gig Harbor, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) and into the right side of the goal.

The Bulldogs (6-2-1) exorcised a pair of slumps this weekend. They defeated 20th-ranked Oregon State 2-0 on Friday, the first win in 12 all-time meetings with the Beavers. Sunday's victory was their first in seven tries against Washington and marked the first time Gonzaga scored a goal against the Huskies.

The Huskies (0-7-2) outshot Gonzaga 10-7, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half during which they controlled the run of play.

'We shouldn't have to give up a goal before deciding to play harder,' said UW coach Lesle Gallimore. 'In the second half we had more pressure and attacked better, but we still didn't have a great purpose to our offense.'

Offense has been a struggle recently for Washington, which tallied just one goal during the current six-game skid that matches the longest losing streak in school history. Six of UW's seven losses have come via one-goal deficits, including four by 1-0 scores.

The defense again was the bright spot for the Huskies who have surrendered only one goal in six of their games. UW smothered the Bulldogs after halftime, limiting them to one second-half shot.

'Our defense played well and Kelsey was solid,' Gallimore said of her team's effort against the Gonzaga attack. 'Other than the goal, they weren't threatening.'

Bulldog goalkeeper Ashley Haugen stopped two shots en route to her fourth shutout. Rasmussen had one save for UW.

Washington closes out its non-conference schedule next weekend with a pair of home games. Second-ranked Portland invades Husky Soccer Field, Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. UW hosts San Francisco, Sunday, Oct. 2 at noon.
