Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match to Gonzaga
Sept. 24, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to Gonzaga Saturday night at Bohler Gym. The game scores were 19-30, 30-27, 30-28, 20-24.
It was the first Zag volleyball victory over the Cougars since Nov. 13, 1990, in a match played in Spokane. WSU had won 16 consecutive meetings with Gonzaga since then, including a 3-1 win at the Martin Centre Sept. 13, 2005, and WSU held a 29 to 9 lead in the series prior to this match.
'Our hearts aren't big enough,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said after the match. 'We're underestimating and not understanding that what's most important is what we're doing on our side of the net: the people who are on our side of the net, the interaction and camaraderie and the connectiveness on our side of the net. Going out and winning 19 to 30 in the first game and coming back out and playing just good enough. That's disappointing.'
Gonzaga (8-7) was led by Michelle Boevers' 24 kills (.365) while Becky Jones and Briawna Mueller added 12 kills each. Jessica Herrera had 22 digs and was one of five Zags in double-figure digs. Setter Heather Dunn had 50 assists while Kelly Steinhaus and Mueller had five blocks each.
Te'Ara Epps, Natalia Owens and Jen Barcus wach had 16 kills for WSU (7-6). Jalen Pendon added 23 digs while setters Maureen Perez and Gwen Davis combined for 52 assists. Epps, who hit .500, led the Cougs with six blocks. Barcus hit .457, recording no errors in 35 attacks, and landed three service aces.
Washington State travels to Eastern Washington University to play the Eagles (8-4) Tues., Sept. 27, for the first time since 1994.
