Sept. 26, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. - California outside hitter Angie Pressey has been named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 19 - Sept. 26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Pressey, a 5-8 sophomore outside hitter from Heathrow, Fla., helped the then-No. 25-ranked Golden Bears to their first ever sweep of the southern California schools. She led the team with 19 kills in Cal's 3-0 victory over No. 13 UCLA, the school's first in 48 meetings. Pressey then added a team-high 21 kills in the Bears' 3-2 win over No. 12 USC. In addition, she recorded two service aces, 21 digs (2.63 dpg) and four blocks (0.50 bpg) over the weekend.
Pressey, currently hitting .334 and averaging 4.71 kills per game, has led the Bears in kills in nine of 11 matches played this season. The No. 14-ranked Bears are now 9-2 on the year (2-0 in the Pac-10) and will continue conference play in Oregon this weekend against Oregon (Sept. 29) and Oregon State (Sept. 30).
This is Pressey's second weekly honor and Cal's 21st Player of the Week honor all-time. As a freshman, she was the Nov. 1, 2004 Player of the Week and went on to be first-team All-Pac-10 and a member of the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.
