WEEKEND PREVIEW: Stanford (4-3-1) will host the 2005 Stanford Nike Invitational this weekend at Maloney Field ... Oakland (Mich.) and Colorado College will kick off the slate of weekend games at 5 p.m. on Friday, with Stanford taking on No. 5 Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. ... On Sunday, Oakland will challenge the Broncos at 11 a.m., while Stanford will take on the Tigers at 1:30 p.m.
TOURNAMENT TALK: This week's tournament field includes one ranked team, Santa Clara ... The fifth-ranked Broncos own a 7-1-1 record heading into Friday night, after defeating then-No. 19 Cal Poly, 2-0, last Sunday ... Colorado College brings a 6-2-3 record into the weekend, after playing three matches in five days last week, and ending with a 2-1 victory at Air Force on Wednesday ... Oakland dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 22 Michigan on Sunday, dropping the Golden Grizzlies to 3-4-1 on the year.
LAST WEEK: Stanford picked up a 2-1 victory at Navy last weekend, as senior Martha West and freshman Marisa Abegg both tallied a goal ... Sophomore Erica Holland earned her first start in goal, playing all 90 minutes and allowing just one goal ... The Cardinal improved to 4-3-1 with the victory.
STANFORD VS. SANTA CLARA: Friday's contest against Santa Clara will be the 28th meeting between the Bay Area Rivals ... The Broncos have a 6-17-4 edge over the Cardinal, winning the most recent match, a 1-0 overtime decision in second round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament ... Stanford's last victory over Santa Clara was a 3-0 win on August 30, 2002.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: Santa Clara has faced five ranked teams in the preseason en route to a 7-1-1 record ... The Broncos' only loss so far was a 2-1 overtime contest against then-No. 3 UCLA ... SCU is out-scoring opponents 1.6-0.6 on average this season, as Jordan Angeli leads the way with six goals.
STANFORD VS. COLORADO COLLEGE: Sunday's match versus Colorado College will be the 10th meeting between the two squads ... The Tigers own a 3-5-1 record over the Cardinal, although the squads have not matched up since the 1997 season when Stanford posted a 6-0 victory over the Tigers.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Colorado College takes a four-game (1-0-3) undefeated streak and 6-2-3 overall record into Friday's match against Oakland University ... For the second consecutive week, Lisa Balsama earned co-Player of the Week honors among the nation's Division I independent programs ... Balsama struck her fourth and fifth goals of the season to fuel last Wednesday's victory over Air Force.
STRONG SCHEDULE: Stanford has one of the toughest schedules in the nation this season, having already faced top-ranked North Carolina, No. 3 Portland and No. 13 Texas A&M ... Still ahead for the Cardinal is No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Santa Clara and No. 15 California ... Eighth of the Cardinal's 2005 opponents are ranked in the top-25 by the NSCAA Poll and another one received votes in the most recent poll, along with Stanford.
PRESEASON POINTS: The Pacific-10 Conference coaches voted Stanford to finish fourth this season, with the Cardinal receiving one vote for first place ... The Cardinal defense is anchored by senior tri-captain Hayley Hunt, a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List candidate.
