USC Powers Up For 2-0 Win Over Long Beach State
Sept. 27, 2005
LOS ANGELES -- USC's return home after six straight games on the road was a successful one. In their Tuesday afternoon game against Long Beach State, the Women of Troy took care of business and tacked up a 2-0 win over the visiting 49ers, thanks to goals by freshman Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) and senior Leah Gallegos (Los Angeles, Calif./Franklin HS/FSU). The victory improves the Trojans to 5-3-1 on the season, while Long Beach State moved to 7-2-1.
Neither team got a good look at the other's goal until 23 minutes into play. And with the offense finally sparked, USC caught the momentum and put it to use. At the 29-minute mark, freshman forward Nini Loucks (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS) got deep in 49er territory and served a cross to Rodriguez in front of the goal. A quick touch later, and Rodriguez rifled the ball into the back of the net to get USC up 1-0 and tally her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Trojans worked hard to try to pad their lead in the second half, firing a series of shots that were just off the mark early in the half. With 10 minutes left to play, their efforts finally paid off. This time, Rodriguez was on the assisting end of the play when she lofted the ball on the face of the goal for Gallegos. Gallegos got a solid head on the ball and drilled it in past diving Long Beach State goalie Liz Ramos for the 2-0 lead and Gallegos' first career goal as a Trojan.
Long Beach State got deep for a late threat, but the dangerous ball was cleared at the goalline by sophomore defender Kat Stolpa (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS). The shutout victory marked USC sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Simonton's (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala HS) fourth shutout of the season. She had five saves in Tuesday's win.
USC returns to action later this week when the Trojans host LMU on Friday (Sept. 30) at 3 p.m. at McAlister Field.
