NEWS AND NOTES
California, yet to be defeated in 2005, posted two more wins over the weekend, defeating UAB, 3-1, on Sat., Sept. 24, following up with a 5-0 offensive explosion over Army the next day to claim the Stanford/Nike Invitational title ... The Bears are now 7-0-1 on the year and ranked as high as third in the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer America polls headed into Pac-10 play ... Senior forward Calen Carr had an outstanding weekend, posting two goals and adding one assist ... Carr leads the Conference in shots (37), shots per game (4.62), points (14), points per game (1.75) and game-winning goals (4) ... In the Bears' match against Army, five different players scored, including Carr, Tyson Wahl, Andrew Jacobson, Steve Purdy and Matt Holtrust ... Cal leads the league in goals, having amassed 19 through eight games played, good enough for a 2.38 average ... The team hits the road for a Fri., Sept. 30 contest against UCLA, followed up by a Sun., Oct. 2 matchup against also-undefeated, San Diego State.
Oregon State played in three matches over the week, posting two wins and a tie to improve to 4-2-4 on the year ... In a mid-week contest against Gonzaga on Tues., Sept. 20, OSU needed two second-half goals from junior forward Bryan Jordan to earn the 2-1 come-from-behind victory ... Following a 1-all double overtime tie on Fri., Sept. 23, the Beavers bounced back with an offensive onslaught to edge Jacksonville, 4-3 on Sun., Sept. 25, and claim the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic title ... Sophomore midfielder Brett Gardner earned Offensive MVP honors over the weekend, scoring two consecutive goals over Jacksonville, notching his fifth and sixth career goals, respectively ... OSU paces the league in shots (124), points (53), assists (19) and saves (61) ... The team will play in its first Conference game of the year, taking on Washington on Sun., Oct. 2 in Corvallis.
San Diego State, 6-0-1 in its unbeaten season thus far, picked up two more wins over the weekend, including a 1-0 edging over Alabama A&M on Thurs., Sept. 22 and a 3-0 victory over Duquesne on Sun., Sept. 25 ... The Aztecs enter the national rankings for the first time this week, claiming the No. 25 spot in the Soccer Times poll ... Sophomore midfielder Kraig Chiles, named to this week's College Soccer News Team of the Week, scored three goals over the weekend and has scored five times in SDSU's last three contests ... Chiles leads the Pac-10 in goals per game (0.86) and is tied for the lead in goals (6) ... The Aztecs pace the Conference in goals allowed (2) goals against average (0.28) and shutouts (6) ... Junior goalkeeper Tally Hall also ranks first in the league in the following categories: goals against average (0.14), save percentage (.950), shutouts (6) and shutouts per game (0.86) ... SDSU opens Conference play against Stanford on Fri., Sept. 30 and California on Sun., Oct. 2, both of which will be played at home.
Stanford picked up back-to-back wins for the first time this season, posting a 2-0 win over Army on Sat., Sept. 24 and a 1-0 victory over UAB the following day in its own Stanford/Nike Invitational ... The Cardinal improve to 3-4-1 on the season ... Stanford has only given up five goals all season, good enough for a 0.62 average, tying for third in the Conference ... Junior goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen was perfect in the net over the weekend, posting two shutouts in 180 total minutes played ... Kartunen now has nine career shutouts and currently ranks second in the Pac-10 in shutouts per game, averaging 0.75 ... Junior midfielder/defender Galen Thompson picked up the lone goal against UAB, while sophomore midfielder Marcus Ryan and sophomore midfielder/defender Kyle Hency each picked up scores in the Army contest ... Stanford will open up Conference play with a trip to San Diego State on Fri., Sept. 30, followed up by a Sun., Oct. 2 contest at UCLA.
UCLA had one lone contest against UNLV last weekend, picking up a 3-0 shutout on Sun., Sept. 25 to improve to 4-2 on the year, earning a ranking as high as ninth in the latest Soccer America and Soccer Times polls ... The Bruins currently pace the Pac-10 in goals per game (2.50) ... Senior midfielder Jonathan Bornstein, named to this week's College Soccer News Team of the Week, contributed to all three UCLA goals against the Runnin' Rebels, scoring two and adding one assist ... Bornstein leads the team in both goals (4) and points (9), and all of this points have come in the last three contests, as he has scored four of the Bruins' five goals during this three-game span ... Sophomore forward Kamani Hill continues to pace the league in assists per game with 0.67 ... UCLA begins Pac-10 play with two matches at home against Cal on Fri., Sept. 30 and Stanford on Sun., Oct. 2.
Washington, currently on a five-match win streak, posted two more wins over the weekend, including a 2-1 double overtime win over Wisconsin on Fri., Sept. 23, followed up by a 1-0 shutout over Hartwick two days later to claim the Husky Fever Classic title ... The match against Wisconsin marked the second time in less than a week that Washington has pulled off a dramatic, come-from-behind rally ... UW is now 6-1 on the year and ranked as high as 14th in the Soccer Times poll ... Sophomore forward Ely Allen earned Offensive MVP honors at the tourney, scoring the game-tying goal against the Badgers, while fueling the UW offense with 12 shots on the weekend ... Allen leads the team with 25 shots on the year ... The Huskies are second in the Pac-10 with a team total of 116 shots, averaging more than 16 per contest ... Washington will open Conference play with a Sun., Oct. 2 match against Oregon State in Corvallis.
SAN DIEGO STATE MIDFIELDER KRAIG CHILES NAMED PAC-10 MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore midfielder Kraig Chiles has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 20-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Chiles, from San Diego, Calif., scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with just over two minutes left against Alabama A&M, giving the Aztecs the 1-0 victory in Thursday's action. On Sunday, he scored two goals in the second half of San Diego State's 3-0 win over Duquesne.
Chiles, who has been named to this week's National Team of the Week by College Soccer News, has scored five times in San Diego State's last three matches and leads the Aztecs with six goals this season.
San Diego State (6-0-1), ranked 24th by College Soccer News, is off to its best start since 1991. The Aztecs open their inaugural Pac-10 season hosting Stanford on Fri., Sept. 30 and California on Sun., Oct. 2.
This is Chiles' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and first weekly honor for San Diego State.
