UW's Mike Jensen Sidelined after Shoulder Surgery
Sept. 29, 2005
The 6-foot-8 forward dislocated his left shoulder two weeks ago while playing basketball. After consulting with team physicians, he opted to correct the problem with surgery. Jensen underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday at the University of Washington Medical Center to repair his labrum.
'We feel really bad for Mike, giving that this is his senior year. He was looking forward to this season so much,' said Romar. 'He is in good spirits after the surgery and he will bounce back. Doing this now will enable Mike to come back and help us later this season.'
Jensen will likely have his left arm in a sling for a couple weeks before beginning the rehabilitation process. He hopes to return for conference play.
'The surgery was in my best interest if I want to be my best and help the team this season,' Jensen said. 'Also, I needed to get this done now if I want to play basketball after college. If I work hard and come back healthy, I'll be able to help my team out a lot.'
The injury is to the same left shoulder that Jensen dislocated during his freshman year. He played five games in 2001-02 before injuring the shoulder in practice and having surgery in December. Jensen missed the remainder of that year and utilized his red-shirt season.
Jensen is one of two returning starters from Washington's 2005 team that posted a 29-6 record, tying a school record for wins. The Huskies won their first Pac-10 Tournament championship, received a No. 1 seed to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16.
A three-year starter, Jensen averaged 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 2005. He is a product of Kentwood (Wash.) High School.
The Huskies begin the 2004-05 campaign with their first official practice on Oct. 14. The season starts Nov. 6 with an exhibition game against Simon Fraser at Bank of America Arena. The regular-season gets underway when UW hosts the eight-team BCA Classic, Nov. 13-15.
The Huskies open Pac-10 play at home against Arizona State on Dec. 29.
