Welcome to Westwood: UCLA Baseball Welcomes 17 New Faces

Sept. 29, 2005

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - As classes began today on the campus of UCLA, Head Coach John Savage welcomed 17 new student-athletes to the Bruin baseball program as part of UCLA's highly touted 2006 recruiting class. Twelve true freshmen and five transfers make up the esteemed group which, along with several key returning members from the 2005 squad, will begin its fall schedule early next month.

'We are very proud to finally see these young men step onto campus here at UCLA,' Savage said. 'Now that school has begun and we're all back together, we can't wait to hit the field and start preparing for a successful 2006 campaign.'

UCLA will begin fall workouts on Monday, October 3, and will then play a 13-game intersquad schedule culminating with the annual Blue-Gold World Series from November 14-19. Scouts Day will be held on Saturday, November 12 at 10:30 a.m. Daily workouts will begin at 2 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays - all practices will be held at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The incoming class, which was rated as the ninth-best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and is also expected to land within the top ten in next month's Baseball America poll, includes seven pitchers, five infielders, five outfielders and two catchers (two are two-way players).

'This class's depth will provide us with a lot of options in the years to come,' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Pat Shine said. 'We feel with this crop of student-athletes and the combination of good players, good students with great makeup, we'll be able to compete and have success in the Pac-10 conference.'
