Bears Open Fall Season Strong at Cal Nike Invitational

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team opened their 2005 fall season at the Cal Nike Invitational Friday, on Hellman Courts. The tournament has the Bears matched up against TCU, Arizona, Saint Mary's, BYU, New Mexico, Duke and USF.

In singles, three out of four Cal players defeated their opponents in the first round to advance on to the round of 16. Sophomore Suzi Babos, the 2005 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, defeated Anna Sydorska of TCU, 6-3;4-6;6-1 then outlasted New Mexico's Nora Quintal in the second round, 6-1;6-4. Sophomore Stefanie Kusano convincingly defeated Saint Mary's Erin Young in two sets, 6-1;6-2 and then went on to beat Juliette Mayroleon of Arizona, 6-4;6-0. No. 2 ranked junior transfer, Szuzsanna Fodor, tallied her first win at Cal against Anastasia Surkova of BYU, 6-2;6-3 to advance on to the round of 16 where she defeated Tara Iyer of Duke, 6-0;6-1. Senior Jessica Shu, who fell in the first round, went on to defeat USF's Picha.Laosirichon, 6-1;6-4 in the consolation round.

The Bears had success in more singles action when No. 1 seeded sophomore Cristina Visico defeated BYU's Briana Williamson, 6-1;6-0. Freshman Bojana Bobusic, who comes to Cal from Australia, grabbed her first win as a Bear when she convincingly defeated Mylene Martin of USF, 6-2;6-2. Claire Ilcinkas, a freshman from Paris, also tabbed her first win in three sets over TCU's Andrea Morgado 5-7;6-0;6-3. No. 2 seeded Marion.Ravelojaona, also from Paris, defeated Vaness Heroux of Fresno State, 6-1;6-0.

The Bears success carried over into doubles, with Cal grabbing three out of four matches. Bobusic and Kusano teamed up to defeat Erika Barnes and Samantha Georgino of Santa Clara, 8-4. Ilcinkas and Ravelojaona paired together to upset No. 4 AnastasiaSurkova and BrianaWilliamson of BYU, 8-6. Also having success were Cal's Visico and Shu, who defeated No. 3 Anna Sydorska and Lindsay McBride of TCU, 8-6. Cal's only loss of the day came to Fodor and Babos who fell to BYU's Dolly Chang and Lauren Jones, 8-6.

The Cal Invitational continues today through Sunday on Hellman Courts, with action taking place all day.
