No. 14 Cal Volleyball Defeats Oregon State, 3-0
Sept. 30, 2005
CORVALLIS, ORE. - The No. 14-ranked California women's volleyball team (11-2, 4-0), led by the play of sophomores Angie Pressey and Ellen Orchard, defeated Oregon State (5-5, 1-3), 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 32-30) Friday night at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis. It was an interesting match-up for Cal coach Rich Feller, as he defeated the Beavers' first-year coach Taras Liskevych. Liskevych was the head coach at the University of the Pacific when Feller was an assistant coach for the Tigers from 1980-83.
Pressey, who was last week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, paced the Bears with 19 kills and had an impressive .484 hitting percentage (19k, 4e, 31att). She only had one hitting error in the first two games of the match. Orchard also played well, recording 11 kills with a .364 hitting percentage (11k, 3e, 22att) and had four total blocks. Freshman Morgan Beck added 13 kills, and junior setter Samantha Carter had 51 assists in the three games.
'We played much more consistently than we did the night before (in Cal's 3-1 victory at Oregon),' said Feller. 'We got pushed a little bit at the end, but it was a much better effort by our team. Overall, it was an outstanding effort by Angie Pressey, who only had one hitting error entering game three and ended up hitting .484 for the match. We are 4-0 in the Pac-10, so we have to be happy about that.'
The Bears next return to Berkeley where they take on the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Washington, in a key Pac-10 showdown, Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Cal then hosts Washington State on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
