Bears Successful on Day Two of Cal Invitational

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team is off to a good start to its fall 2005 season. That was evident yesterday as Cal defeated four out of six opponents in the quarterfinals of singles play on day two of the Cal Nike Invitational.

Cal's No. 1 seeded Suzi Babos defeated No. 7 Olga Boulytcheva of BYU, 6-3;6-3 in the quarterfinals of singles play, to advance on to the finals. Stephanie Kusano convincingly defeated No. 4 Sabrina Capannolo of ASU, 6-2:6-2 and will face teammate Suzi Babos today in the finals, which will be held on Hellman Courts. No. 2 Zsuzsanna Fodor fell to UNC's Jenna Long in six rounds, 7-6; 6-1. Jessica Shu defeated UC Davis's Robin Guier, 6-1;6-1, in the consolation quarterfinals.

In other quarterfinal singles action, No. 1 seeded Cristina Visico tallied a win against No. 6 Rebecca Rankin of ASU, 6-2;6-3. No. 2 Marion.Ravelojaona of Cal defeated teammate Claire Ilcinkas, 6-2;6-3, while Bojana Bobusic fell to TCU's Gloriann Lopez, 6-4;6-3.

In doubles play, ASU's No. 3 Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke defeated Cal's duo Bojana Bobusic and Stephanie Kusano, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. The Bears had success in the doubles consolation round, with No. 4 Zsuzsanna Fodor and Suzi Babos defeating both of their opponents. The pair grabbed their first victory defeating UC Davis's Ally Muller and Robin Guier, 8-0, then went on to outlast Bruna Paes and Jacqui Haskett, 8-1, of Fresno State.

In more doubles play, Claire Ilcinkas and Marion.Ravelojaona teamed up to defeat Erin Young and Stef Ordoveza of Saint Mary's, 8-1 in the quarterfinals. Also tallying a win for the Bears was Cristina Visico and Jessica Shu, when they defeated New Mexico's Mackenzie White and Nora Quintal, 8-2.

Claire Ilcinkas and Marion.Ravelojaona capped off doubles play when they outlasted UNC's No. 1 Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic, 9-8, in the semifinals of doubles. ASU's No. 2 Jessica Leitch and Laila Abdala defeated Cal's Cristina Visico and Jessica Shu, 8-5.

The Cal Invitational will conclude today on Hellman Courts, with action taking place all day.
