No. 15 UW Men Fall To Oregon State 1-0
Oct. 2, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 15 Washington men' soccer had its five-game winning streak snapped, falling to Oregon State, 1-0, in both teams' Pac-10 opener at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers (5-2-4, 1-0) used a goal from Robbie Findlay in the 41st minute and staved off chances from the Huskies (6-2-0, 0-1) late in the match to hold on for the victory. It marked the fourth-straight loss for Washington in Corvallis dating back to the 2002 season.
Findlay came off the bench midway through the first half and after receiving a pass from Ryan Johnson, beat UW goalkeeper Chris Eylander one-on-one for the score at the 40:06 minute mark.
'We found it difficult to cope with the early aggression and pressure they put us under,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'We're disappointed but we played fairly well. We just didn't have enough in the offensive area to make the difference. This has been a pretty difficult place to win for us and for a lot of other teams, but we know they have to play back at our place.'
The Husky defense kept OSU at bay through the second half, but couldn't capitalize on two chances for the equalizer. With seven minutes left, sophomore forward Spencer Schmidt beat the OSU defense and was one-on-one with Beaver goalkeeper Packy Deenihan, only to have his low hard shot saved by Deenihan. Senior midfielder Jeff Hoover also had a shot from distance that sailed just above the crossbar with five minutes to play.
The loss marked the first time in eight games the Huskies' have been shutout this season.
Hoover and Schmidt led the Husky attack with two shots apiece, while Eylander registered five saves. Deenihan grabbed three saves and Johnson led Oregon State with five shots.
Washington continues Pac-10 play in Seattle next weekend, hosting UCLA (Friday, Oct. 7) and San Diego State (Sunday, Oct. 9).
