Tough First Day For Tennis At All-American Championships

Oct. 1, 2005

LOS ANGELES - The 2005-06 fall tennis season began on a sour note today for the Washington women's tennis team, as their two entries were defeated in the first round of prequalifying at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships. Hosted by UCLA, the two day prequalifying event feeds players into further qualifying draws and eventually the main draw played at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

In today's first round, junior Saskia Nauenberg fell 7-5, 6-4 to Brooke Beier of Purdue. Sophomore Tara Simpson also lost in straight sets, to third-seeded Kelly Anderson of Georgia Tech.

Simpson and senior Dinka Hadzic are entered in the prequalifying doubles draw and are the No. 2 seed. They received a first round bye this afternoon. Hadzic herself is entered in the qualifying draw for singles which begins Oct. 4.
