UCLA Runs at Triton Classic on Saturday
Oct. 3, 2005
Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Oct. 8) will send a limited women and men's squad to the UC San Diego Triton Classic Invitational. Running on a campus course, the meet will start with a women's 6K at 8:30 a.m. and a men's 8K at 9:30 a.m.
Looking ahead, on Saturday, Oct. 15, midway through the cross country campaign, the Bruins will travel to Terre Haute, IN for the Pre-NCAA Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University. Held at the Wabash Family Sports Center, the race will feature the nation's top women and men's squads, running on the same course as the upcoming NCAA Championships (held Monday, Nov. 21). Starting at 8 a.m. (PT), the women will run 6000m and the men 8000m. There are six races, including two seeded races for the women and men and two open races. In 2002 and 2004, nearly 100 women and men's teams competed at the Pre-NCAA Invitational.
UCLA did not have a competition over the weekend (Oct. 1-2) and trained, preparing for the upcoming Triton and Pre-NCAA meets. In this week's national women's poll, the Bruin women did receive votes (No. 36, four votes).
Two weeks ago, the Bruin women and men's teams on Saturday (Sept. 24) competed at the Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota and the Les Bolstad Golf Course. Both the women and the men (tied) placed 13th in the team standings.
The Bruin women were led by junior Ashley Caldwell, who placed fourth overall, running the 6000m course in a time of 21:05. Caldwell has been UCLA's top runner this season. On Sept. 17 at the Sundodger Invite in Seattle, she finished third in the women's race, running the 6000m in 21:04.
UCLA's men were paced by junior Austin Ramos, who finished sixth over the 8000m course in a time of 24:21. The Bruins' top men's runner this fall, Ramos was the men's individual event winner at the Sundodger Invite, covering the 8000m course in 24:00.
Following the Triton and Pre-NCAA Invitationals, the Bruins will have a final tune-up before the start of the championship meets. On Friday, Oct. 21, UCLA will run a campus course at the CS Fullerton Invitational.
Then, on Saturday, Oct. 29, the 2005 Pac-10 Championships will be held in Tucson, AZ and on Saturday, Nov. 21, the 2005 NCAA West Regional Championships will be in Palo Alto.
