Oct. 3, 2005

LOS ANGELES - Members of the UCLA women's tennis team saw their first action of the fall season this past weekend, competing in the pre-qualifying of the ITA Riviera/All-American Championships at UCLA. The qualifying portion of the tournament begins on Tuesday at the Riviera Country Club.

Freshman Ashley Joelson didn't drop a set in three pre-qualifying singles matches over the weekend to advance to Tuesday's qualifying. She opened up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Minnesota's Ida Malmberg, and then went on to defeat Ristine Olson of Texas (6-4, 6-3) and Lana Krasnopolsky of Boston College (6-4, 6-3).

Joelson was the only Bruin player to make it through pre-qualifying, as sophomore Elizabeth Lumpkin fell in her opening singles match. In doubles action, sophomore Tracy Lin and Lumpkin were upset in the first round.

Four UCLA players will be competing in Tuesday's singles qualifying. Lin, Joelson, Laura Gordon and Alex McGoodwin will all be in action. Gordon and McGoodwin are also entered in the doubles draw.
