Purple Evens Series With Back-To-Back Wins

Oct. 4, 2005

SEATTLE - The Purple team pulled even in the annual, seven-game Fall World Series with back-to-back wins over the Gold squad this past Saturday and Monday.

Saturday, the Purple scored a run in the ninth on two-out wild pitch to pull out a 3-2 win. Then on Monday (after Sunday's game was rained out), the Purple evened up the series with a 7-4 win.

Saturday, with the score tied at 2-2, Purple first baseman Curt Rindal walked to open the ninth. After stealing second, he moved to third on a two-out single from Jesse Ferguson. A wild pitch from reliever Matt Hague then allowed Rindal to score the winning run.

Gold team starter Tim Lincecum saw a very solid performance go for naught. He threw seven innings, allowing only two hits and one run while walking none and striking out nine. After allowing three base-runners in the first inning, he retired the last 20 batters he faced.

Bryce Mooney earned the win, allowing one hit in his only inning of work. Purple starter Kyle Parker allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. Gold catcher D.J. Neyens provided his team's only two runs with a two-run homer in the sixth.

After rain forced game four to be moved to Monday, the Purple tied the series thanks to an offensive outburst. Catcher Joey Dunn went 3-for-3 with a homer and a double, Matt Lane had two hits, including a homer, and Nick Burnham belted a pinch-hit homer as the Purple won the seven-inning game, 7-4.

Freshman shortstop Danny Cox had a double and two RBI to lead the Gold offense. Purple reliever Matt Kasser struck out the only batter he faced in the fifth to pick up the win and freshman Tyler Cheney suffered the loss.

The seven-game fall series continues with game five tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Husky Ballpark. Admission is free to all Fall World Series games. Here's the remaining schedule for the Fall World Series: Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
