BERKELEY, CALIF. - Q&A with Linebacker Desmond BishopBy Veronica White

Desmond Bishop, a 6-2, 245-pound junior linebacker has been a pleasant addition to the Golden Bears' defense this season. Entering the Arizona game, the transfer from San Francisco City College has led Cal in tackles in three of the team's four games, totaling a team-high 32 tackles on the year, including a best of 11 tackles versus Illinois in the Bears' 35-20 victory. Bishop is ninth in the Pac-10, averaging eight tackles per game.

How is Cal football going?

Desmond Bishop: 'It is going well. I have good teammate and good coaches making me utilize the best of my abilities.'

What are the differences between playing at a junior college and playing at Cal?

Bishop: 'I think it's a little more serious (at Cal) because of the fact that this is Division I. Also, the hours are more extreme because at junior college the practice is only two hours, but here it's sun up to sun down with meetings and practice, so it's a lot harder.'

How has the transition been from San Francisco CC to playing at Cal?

Bishop: 'I'm adjusting pretty well. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think that it's my passion for the game. Whatever the coaches say and whatever the schedule is, I am willing to follow it to the best of my ability.'

What game are you looking forward to this season?

Bishop: 'We have to take one game at a time, so that is what I am going to do. I am looking forward to all the games, but everybody knows the USC game is number one.'

What do you hope to accomplish this season being a transfer?

Bishop: 'Usually, junior college players have to take a year to make the transition, but I wanted to make the transition right now so when the first game came I was totally prepared.'

What is your favorite thing about Cal so far?

Bishop: 'Just hanging with my teammates and having a good time. It's nice having some teammates from SFCC here, like Lavelle Hawkins and Fahim (Mujaahid Abd Allah).'

How is school been going so far?

Bishop: 'School is going well. There is a lot of reading and challenging work. As a student-athlete you have to adapt to the academic life.'
