Bears to Compete at All-American Championships In Los Angeles

BERKELEY - WHAT'S ON TAP: The Golden Bears will be competing at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Tuesday-Sunday, Oct.4-9 in Los Angeles. The All-American Championships is the premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season and features the top players in NCAA Division I tennis. The Oct. 6-9 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament was Oct. 1-2 at UCLA and four players and doubles teams advance from there to the Oct. 4-5 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw). The famous Riviera Tennis Club has hosted the event since 1988.
CAL IN THE TOURNAMENT: Cal's Stephanie Kusano will face off against Kendra Strohn at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning in the round of 64 singles action, while No. 16 Cristina Visico will take on Sufi Hala of Purdue at 10:30 a.m. On the doubles court, Zsuzsanna Fodor and Suzi Babos will pair up to face Judy DeVera and Dianne Matias of Southern California, while Stephanie Kusano and Cristina Visico will take on Ashlee Davis and Alex Hirsch of Wake Forest.
BEARS SUCCESSFUL AT CAL NIKE INVITATIONAL: The Bears hosted the second annual Cal Nike Invitational last weekend on Hellman Courts to kick off the 2005 fall season. Cal wrapped up the tournament with three players advancing to the finals. Cal's No. 1 seeded Suzi Babos defeated teammate Stephanie Kusano, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 Sunday afternoon in the singles semifinal. Babos then fell to No. 3 Maja Kovacek of New Mexico, 6-3, 6-3 in the finals. Senior Jessica Shu was defeated by Roxanne Clarke of ASU, 7-6(4), 6-1. On the doubles court, No. 4 Zsusanna Fodor teamed up with No. 4 Suzi Babos to defeat USF's Sarah Oudomvilay and Picha.Laosirichon, 8-2, in the consolation finals. In more singles action Cristina Visico  defeated Gloriann Lopez , while Marion Ravelojaona  outlasted UNC's Tanja Markovic  3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals. Marion.Ravelojaona  then went on to defeat teammate Cristina Visico  6-1, 6-0, in the finals.
