Cal Advances on at ITA All-American Qualifying

LOS ANGELES - The California women's tennis team completed the first day of play yesterday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Los Angeles. Action resumes today through Sunday, with matches being played all day.

In the round of 64 singles action, Cal's Stephanie Kusano defeated Kendra Strohn of Texas, 6-2; 6-4, then fell to Gantcheva Elena of UNLV, 6-2; 6-3 in the round of 32. No. 16 seeded Cristina Visico convincingly defeated Sufi Hala of Purdue, 6-6; 6-1 and then went on to outlast UCLA's Lin Tracy, 7-5; 6-4 in the round of 32. Visico will face Carolin Walter of Baylor Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the round of 16.

On the doubles court, Suzi Babos teamed up with Zsuzsanna Fodor to defeat USC's Judy DeVera and Dianne Matias, 8-2, in the round of 32. Babos and Fodor will face Ashley Bentley and Robin Stephenson of Alabama Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the round of 16. Visico and Kusano fell to Wake Forest's Ashlee Davis and Alex Hirsch, 8-6, in the round of 32.
