Husky Rowing Legends to Attend Olympic Dream Golf Classic
Oct. 5, 2005
SEATTLE - An event designed to support the red, white and blue will have a decidedly purple tint to it.
At least 20 former Olympians from the state of Washington will be in attendance at the 12th-annual Olympic Dream Golf Classic, Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Rainier Golf and Country Club. Among the group of athletes being honored are eight former University of Washington crew competitors.
Former state of Washington governors Gary Locke and Albert D. Rosellini headline the list of dignitaries scheduled to honor former Olympians and generate support for future Olympians. Proceeds from the classic, sponsored by the Washington State United States Olympic Committee, will benefit U.S. Olympic hopefuls and the Olympians for Olympians Relief Fund.
The former Huskies who will be present are: Anna Mickelson (2004 silver medal), Mary Whipple (2004 silver medal), John Stillings (1984 silver medal), Betsy Beard-Stillings (1984 gold medal), Alan Forney (1984 Silver medal) and Mike Hess (1976 Olympics).
Also planning to attend are Husky rowing legends Roger Morris and Joe Rantz, the two surviving members of the University of Washington's celebrated 1936 gold medal crew.
Govs. Locke and Rosellini will make a proclamation in honor of Morris and Rantz at the golf classic.
The entire Washington varsity eight represented the United States at the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany in 1936.
The final race was witnessed by 70,000 vocal spectators on Lake Grunau, including Adolf Hitler who presented gold medals and olive wreaths to the victorious Huskies. Entering the race, the crews from Germany and Italy were the heavy favorites.
The Husky-powered U.S. shell got off to a slow start, but steadily caught up with the field throughout the race. The U.S. boat took the lead in the final 50 meters, winning by a few feet.
That triumph has been heralded as one of the greatest moments in Seattle sports history. It was named the 'Sports Event of the Century' by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper.
The Olympic Dream Golf Classic is set to tee off at noon with a dinner and auction to begin at 6 p.m.
