Men's Tennis Competes in Bronco Invitational

WHAT'S ON TAP: The California Men's Tennis team will compete this week at the Santa Clara Tournament. Senior Lennart Maack, juniors Tyler Browne and Daniel Sebescen are currently competing at the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren/ All-American tournament in Tulsa, Oka., the tournament gives a glimpse of the top collegiate tennis prospects competing this season.
ITA POLO RAPLH LAUREN/ ALL AMERICAN UPDATE: Senior Lennart Maack, juniors Daniel Sebescen and Tyler Browne traveled to the Polo/ITA All-American this week. Singles and doubles qualifying rounds took place on Oct. 3-5. Browne advanced in singles qualifying, while Maack and Sebescen fell in opening round action. Browne and Sebescen also teamed up for doubles play at the tournament. The pair advanced to the second round before falling. Main draw competition opens on Oct. 6; Maack is the No. 5 singles seed.
FABULOUS FRESHMEN: Freshmen Tore Deleuran-Skjold and Eoin Heavey made an instant impact on the Cal men's tennis team at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Sept. 9-11. The dynamic duo teamed up in doubles competition, defeating North Carolina's Karl Wishart and Will Plyer (9-7) on Oct. 9 and defeated the Tar Heels' Ben Carlotti and David Stone (8-6) on Oct. 10. Heavey went undefeated collecting three victories in singles. Deleuran also recorded two singles victories.
A LOOK AT THE TOURNAMENT: The second annual Bronco Invitational is hosted by Santa Clara University. The tournament begins on Oct. 7 and runs through Oct. 9. The three-day tournament will feature some of the best talent on the west coast. Over 80 participants from 12 universities will compete in the event. The tournament will be held at two sites, the Degheri Tennis Center on the Santa Clara campus and the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club. Each will start off with doubles matched beginning at 9 a.m. (PDT) , with singles matches to follow.
THIS FIELD: Teams competing in this weekend's Bronco Invitational include: CAL, Stanford , Nevada, Oregon, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Diego State, UC Davis, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara.
Head Coach Peter Wright: Considered one of the best teachers and tacticians in men's collegiate tennis, Peter Wright has developed a reputation for getting more out of his players than perhaps any coach in the country. Wright's coaching talent hasn't gone unnoticed in 1997 and 2001 he was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. He received his first coaching award in 1994 when he was named Wilson/ITA Regional Coach of the Year. Wright and the Bears have been a fixture in the NCAA Tournament almost every year since. The ninth coach in the 110-year history of Cal tennis, Wright has compiled a 149-110 (.576) career record during his tenure in Berkeley. Wright currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as well as the Youth Tennis Advantange and the Arthur Ashe Tennis Foundation of the Bay Area. He established the Bear Trax program at Cal, which brings inner city children from Oakland to Berkeley for academic tutoring with Cal students and tennis tutoring with the Cal men's and women's teams. Wright is also currently the chairman of the NCAA men's tennis committee. He is assisted by Jun Hernandez, who enters his sixth season.
