BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's and women's basketball teams open the 2005-06 season with Rock the Haas Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The free event is open to everyone, and fans will receive free Rock the Haas t-shirts and burritos provided by Baja Fresh while supplies last. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Rock the Haas gives fans their first official look at this year's Golden Bear basketball teams. The festivities include team introductions, three-point shooting and slam dunk contests, fan competitions and performances by the Cal band, The Frontline (a Bay Area hip hop group) and the Cal Dance Team.
Sophomore Leon Powe, the 2003-04 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, returns to Cal's men's lineup after missing last year with a knee injury. Seniors Richard Midgley and Rod Benson are also back to lead the Bears. Omar Wilkes, who sat out 2004-05 after transferring from Kansas, and his younger brother, Jordan, will make their debuts this season. Cal completed a summer trip to Italy with a 5-0 record.
After leading Richmond to three straight 20-plus win seasons, Joanne Boyle enters her first year at the helm of Cal's women's team. Led by McDonald's All-Americans Devanei Hampton and Alexis Gray-Lawson, the Bears welcome the No. 7-ranked recruiting class in the country. Hampton and Gray-Lawson combined to lead Oakland Tech to the 2004 and 2005 state titles. Sophomore Jessica Lawson, a 2004-05 Pac-10 All-Freshman selection, and senior Renee Wright are also among the players to watch this year.
