Swimming Opens Season Vs. UBC Friday

SEATTLE--The Washington swimming team makes its season debut Friday with a relay-only meet against British Columbia at 6 pm. Last season, the Husky men defeated UBC 204-164, winning all 10 events. The women's teams did not face each other.

Bruno Barbic led the Huskies with four victories (800 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay). Taylor Brugh, Peter Wicklund and Brenton Dowdy each earned three victories for Washington.

The meet will follow the NCAA relay format including the 300 butterfly relay (3x100), 300 backstroke relay (3x100), 300 breaststroke relay (3x100), 800 freestyle relay (4x200), 500 freestyle relay (50, 100, 150, 200), 400 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay (4x50), 1500 freestyle relay (3x500), 400 individual medley relay (4x100), and 400 freestyle relay (4x100).

The men's team returns 15 letterwinners and welcomes five newcomers. The women's team returns 14 letterwinners and welcomes eight newcomers.

Head coach Mickey Wender returns for his eighth season with the Huskies. He boasts a 65-23 men's dual meet record and a 72-26 women's dual meet record. Since joining the Washington staff in 1998, the Huskies have broken nearly 80 school records and have crowned 10 All-Americans.
