Men's Tennis Competes at Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The California men's tennis team competed in the first round of the Bronco Invitational in Santa, Clara, Calif. The Golden Bears won four singles contest and two doubles matches on Friday.
Individually, sophomore Ken Nakahara defeated Saint Mary's Andre Sion [6-4, 2-0 (Ret. Inj.)]. Junior John Pettit outlasted Saint Mary's Adam Faurve (4-6, 6-1, 7-5). Freshman Eoin Heavey easily nabbed a victory for the Golden Bears, by defeating Saint Mary's Yury Platonov (6-3, 6-3). In Cal's lone loss in singles, junior Jirou Nakajima fell to Santa Clara's Blaine Shields [7-5, 5-7, 3-0 (Ret. Inj.)]. Tore Deleuran claimed a victory for Cal in the consolation bracket, by defeating Nevada's Rafal Stupka [6-3, 5-7, 1-0(5)].
The Bears' success carried into doubles action. The freshman duo of Heavey and Deleuran teamed to defeat Nevada's Dzhafarov and Tonelli (8-4). Pettit and Nakahara also grabbed a doubles victory for the Bears, by defeating San Francisco's Huttenberger and O'Shea (8-4).
The Bears will continue play at the Bronco Invitational. The tournament is being held at two sites, the Degheri Tennis Center on the Santa Clara campus and the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club. Saturday's round will start off with doubles matched beginning at 9 a.m. (PDT), with singles matches to follow.
