UW Men Edged By No. 12 UCLA 1-0
Oct. 7, 2005
SEATTLE - A goal on a free kick by Patrick Ianni in the 35th minute proved to be the deciding score, as the No. 12 UCLA Bruins shutout Washington, 1-0, in Pac-10 men's soccer action Friday evening.
The loss is the second-straight for Washington which drops to 6-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play. UCLA improves to 7-2-0 and continues to lead the Pac-10 with a 3-0-0 league mark.
UCLA, which was outshot by UW 12-8, capitalized on a restart at the 34:52 minute mark. Ianni launched a free kick from over 20 yards, up over the UW two-man wall and through a pack of players in front of the goal.
The Huskies certainly had their scoring chances throughout the match, beginning with a rocket from senior Evan Cummings that was saved by UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed just 2 minutes and 46 seconds into the game. Senior Jeff Hoover and sophomore Spencer Schmidt paired for back-to-back shots, one saved by Reed and one just wide in the 34th minute.
'We played well and had chances to score,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger. 'Goal scoring has been leaving us short the last couple of games. UCLA's coach said it best, `you outplayed us tonight, we were lucky we won.' Now we've got to keep that going. They whipped in one quality restart that they bent in with pace and power and skipped by everybody, that's a bit of quality by them. I think we had chances all night, from beginning to end, but we weren't able to convert.'
Reed made a total of four saves on the night, while UW keeper Chris Eylander grabbed one.
The Huskies will look to snap their two-game losing streak and scoring drought, hosting No. 15 San Diego State, Sunday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. The Aztecs fell to Oregon State earlier Friday, 2-1.
