Cougars Lose to No. 13 California

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California Golden Bears volleyball team, ranked 13th nationally, defeated Washington State 30-16, 30-26, 30-23, Saturday night at Haas Pavilion on the UC Berkeley campus.
California moves to a record of 12-3 overall, 5-1 in Pacific-10 Conference action while WSU falls to 8-10 overall, 1-4 in league matches.
Alicia Powers, Morgan Beck and Jenna Brown combined for 35 of Cal's 53 kills in the match. Powers also led the Golden Bears with five blocks and Brown added 17 digs. Samantha Carter had 47 assists.
WSU's Natalia Owens had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Jalen Pendon also had 10 digs. Jen Barcus added nine kills and a pair of blocks while Te'Ara Epps led the team with four blocks. Gwen Davis had 23 assists and three blocks.
The Cougars played Cal tough early in the first game and was within three points in both the second and third games but the Golden Bears finished strong and took the three-game sweep. Cal hit .262 for the match and held WSU to a .110 hitting percentage.
Washington State hosts No. 17 USC Thursday, Oct. 13, and No. 21 UCLA Friday, Oct. 14, in 7 p.m. matches at Bohler Gym.
