No. 15 Cal Records First Pac-10 Win Over Stanford
Oct. 8, 2005
STANFORD - The No. 15 California men's soccer team recorded its first Pac-10 win against Stanford, 1-0, late in the game Saturday evening at Maloney Field. Cal improves to 8-2-1, 1-2 in Pac-10 play, while Stanford drops to 3-5-2, 0-2-1 in the Pac-10.
The game got off to an unfortunate start for Stanford when TJ Novak collided with Cal's Andrew Jacobson and broke his leg in the 18th minute.
Both teams went scoreless throughout the first half and most of the second. It looked as though the Bears were going to score in the 60th minute when Andrew Jacobson passed the ball to Calen Carr, who took the shot but it went wide.
In the 65th minute Stanford had a good opportunity to score off a free kick, but the shot was saved by Cal's goalkeeper, Eric Kronberg Kronberg recorded 4 saves for the night.
In the 77th minute, senior midfielder Pieter Berger snapped Cal's two game losing streak when he scored the game-winning goal. Luke Sassano crossed the ball to Berger from about 20 yards out on the right side of the field. Berger was positioned in front of the goal and found the open net past Stanford's keeper Andrew Kartunen. Berger recorded his first game-winning goal of the season.
Cal comes home next weekend after being on the road for the past three weeks. Cal will face Oregon State, Friday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. and Washington on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.
