Challenges Ahead for Cougar Cross Country at Pre-Nationals Meet

THIS WEEK: The Cougar cross country team will compete at the Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday, while a second group will travel to Cheney, Wash., to compete in the EWU Invitational.
THE PRE-NATIONALS: The meet takes place at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind...both the men's and women's races will be divided into two seeded heats determined by the NCAA Cross Country Sub-Committee...the Blue and White heat races will have the top-ranked programs divided equally among them to ensure top competition in each race...the Washington State women's team will be among 78 teams competing in the event with 23 of the top 30 teams in the country represented, including Pac-10 rivals Stanford (No. 3), Arizona State (No. 6), Washington (No. 23) and Oregon (No. 30)...the Cougar men will face a field of 75 teams populated with 25 of the top 30 teams in the nation, including Pac-10 members Stanford (No. 5), Arizona (No. 6), Washington (No. 24) and Arizona State (No. 27)...the men's 8,000m heats are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. ET with the women's 6,000m heats to follow at 12:20 p.m. and 12:55 p.m. ET...for more information and results, visit www.indstate.edu.
THE EWU INVITATIONAL: The Eastern Washington Invitational is a small format meet ... teams from Washington, Idaho, and Oregon are set to compete, including Gonzaga, Idaho, Portland State and Montana ...the event takes place on the grass athletic fields at the university with the women's 5,000m race beginning at 11 a.m. and the men's 8,000m race scheduled for 11:30 a.m....additional information can be found at the EWU website, www.goeags.com
WSU WOMEN: Washington State will be represented by eight runners at the Pre-Nationals meet led by sophomore Haley Paul, last year's top Cougar finisher and winner of her last three races...sophomores Isley Gonzalez and Collier Lawrence will also make the trip to Indiana along juniors Kayle Peterson, Kelly Ramirez and Natalie Smith...redshirt freshman Meghan Leonard and freshman Marisa Sandoval round out the Cougar Pre-National competitors...a full team also heads to Cheney, Wash., for the EWU Invitational...Kelli Dahlquist, Michelle DeCourcey, Karen DeMartini, Selena Galaviz, Kristi Jensen, Casey Maus, Eileen Morley and Katie Troy will comprise the Cougar squad.
OUTLOOK: 'This Pre-National race is a huge opportunity to see where the team stands, and size up against other teams in preparation for the Pac-10 and Regional meets coming up,' said Head Coach Jason Drake. 'This will be Haley Paul's first real test, and our depth and experience will help the women's team's chances this weekend.'
WSU MEN: Redshirt freshman Woody Favinger will lead a team of nine Cougars into the Pre-Nationals meet ...redshirt junior Ryan Freimuth and redshirt sophomore Chris Concha make their second appearance at the Pre-Nationals meet for the Cougars and are joined by senior Justin Ireland, redshirt sophomore Chris Williams, redshirt freshmen C.J. Godfrey and Drew Polley, and freshmen Sam Ahlbeck and Derry Betts...also running this weekend at Cheney, Wash., for the EWU Invitational, are Freshmen Dan Lucero, who will be in uniform, and Josh Brown and Dominic Smargiassi, who will compete unattached.
OUTLOOK: 'Our top three (Favinger, Freimuth and Polley) will be very competitive with the other teams out there this weekend,' said Drake. 'We'll have a lot of newcomers out there on the course, but it will be good for our team to get the experience.'
LAST YEAR AT THE PRE-NATIONALS: At the 2004 meet, the men placed 20th in the Blue Races, also held at Terre Haute...Danny Wolf and Mike Heidt ran to 19th and 27th place finishes respectively...in the women's Blue race, the Cougars finished 28th and were led by Haley Paul (112th place) and Kayle Peterson (134th place).
NEXT COMPETITION: WSU will have a week off before traveling to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Pac-10 Championships Oct. 30.
