Oct. 10, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - Outfielder Jared Prince had an RBI double and scored twice while starter Matt Oye worked 4 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run as the Crimson squad defeated the Gray 6-1 in the first game of the Crimson and Gray World Series Monday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Prince drove an 0-1 pitch off Gray starter Mike Wagner to the outfield, scoring Paul Gran to tie the score at 1-1. One out later, Prince came around to score on Travis Coulter's two-run single, that also plated Nick Hall. The Gray squad jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Scott Sutt led off with a double then scored on Garrett Kimbrel's sacrifice fly. That was the only run of the game for the Gray, who collected eight hits but struck out 10 times on the afternoon.
Prince and Hall each scored twice for the Crimson team while Coulter had two of the team's five hits. Oye picked up the win as he scattered five hits, striking out two as he allowed just the unearned run. Ross Humes and Ryan Davis pitched the final 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
Mike Wagner started for the Gray, allowing three runs on four hits in his two innings of work. Three other Gray pitchers saw action in the game, with Eric Dingwall going three innings of no-run relief while striking out three.
Game two of the series is set for Tuesday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
