Fink Reaches ITA Semifinals

In the first tournament as a Trojan, freshman Amanda Fink won eight straight matches on her way to a semifinal appearance at the Rivera/ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championships on Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Rivera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. In the semifinals Fink fell to former Trojan Nicole Leimbach 6-4, 7-5. Leimbach who now plays for TCU, went on to clinch the title.
En route to the semifinals, Fink defeated No. 25-seeded Maja Kovacek of New Mexico 6-3, 6-4 and Stanford's No.27-seeded Theresa Logar 6-3, 6-1 on Friday (Oct. 7). On Saturday Fink overcame Susie Babos of California 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Other Trojans competing in the tournament included junior Dianne Matias who defeated Jackie Carleton of Duke 6-3, 6-1; Dominika Dieskova of Oregon 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 and fell to Boglarka Berecz of Florida 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Luana Magnani defeated No.12-seeded Sara Foster of Texas A&M 6-4, 6-2 and lost to Tarryn Rudman of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Anca Anastasiu, who entered the tournament seeded No.-17, fell to Kim Hartman of Nebraska 6-4, 7-6 (0). Senior Carine Vermeulen was defeated by Kathrin Winterhalter of Fresno State 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Fink and Magnani teamed up and reached the quarterfinal round of doubles play. After beating Megan Moulton-Levy/ Megan Muth of Williams and Mary 8-6, and Ashlee Davis/ Alex Hirsch of Wake Forest 8-4 in the opening rounds. Fink and Magnani faced Boglarka Berecz/ Lolita Frangulyan of Florida in the quarterfinals where they fell in a tight match 9-8 (5).
Junior Judy DeVera and Matias lost to Susie Babos/ Zsuzzana Foor of California 8-4 in the opening rounds of doubles play.
This event was the first of three national championships for women during the 2005-06 collegiate tennis season.
The Women of Troy's next outing will be in an exhibition fall match at Notre Dame Friday (Oct. 14)
